What an interesting discussion. Personal computers weren't even on the landscape when I originally went to school, and the first ones I learned to work with were dedicated word processors.

My 18yo DD brings hers to school and since I can type faster than I can write and since I keep missing important parts of the lecture notes I started bringing mine. Unfortunately both times something caused me to lose information (note to self; save every 5 minutes!) and I find my own keyboard loud and distracting!

I don't surf during class, but then I'm only taking one class at a time, I'm there because I want to be and am genuinely interested in the topic, and I have plenty of surf time elsewhere in my life. But I do worry that I'm distracting others.
